Let’s talk story

Ty Sanga is an award winning kanaka maoli filmmaker from Kalihi, Oʻahu. He is the director of the PBS food and travel show, Family Ingredients. The show was nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards, including one for Directing. Family Ingredients won an Emmy in 2014. His short film Stones was the first film directed by a Native Hawaiian that screened at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. The film is currently found on the Criterion Collection.

He went on to direct the feature documentary Visions in the Dark: The Life of Pinky Thompson. It was nominated for Best Documentary. Then Sanga directed the inspiring short film, Hae Hawaiʻi, which won the Audience Award at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival for Best Short Film. In 2023, his latest feature documentary, Hōkūleʻa: Finding the Language of the Navigator premiered at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival and won Best Made in Hawaiʻi Feature Film.

He has a Bachelors in Ethnic Studies from the University of Hawaiʻi, Mānoa, and received a Masters in Film Production from Chapman University.
